It sounds obvious, doesn\u2019t it?<br \/>\nYet it\u2019s amazing how few people actually do this.<\/p>\n<p>How do I know?<\/p>\n<p>Because when I ask the businesses and companies I work with, as well as the private individuals and managers I advise, the following question:<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;How do you market your business or yourself?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nThe most common response is: <strong>&#8220;Word-of-mouth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words, people often don\u2019t invest in or plan their marketing efforts. Instead, they rely on their existing customers to spread the word about them.<\/p>\n<p>Word-of-mouth marketing is indeed effective (with high conversion rates), but it has two significant drawbacks:<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>1. Why Word-of-Mouth Marketing Isn\u2019t Enough to Grow Your Business<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If I wait for one satisfied customer, let\u2019s call them <strong>X<\/strong>, to talk about me, months (or even years) could pass before someone else contacts me and says, &#8220;I heard about you through X.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, during that gap, there are bills to pay\u2014rent, employee salaries, and other expenses, right?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest <strong>word-of-mouth marketing challenges<\/strong> is the long time it takes to generate referrals between customers.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>2. The Fundamental Assumption is Flawed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The second, more critical issue lies in the assumption that people must first use your product or service before recommending it.<\/p>\n<p>Now let me ask you this:<br \/>\nWhat happens if you\u2019re just starting a new business? Or launching a new campaign, department, or product?<\/p>\n<p>And what if you want to expand your customer base and reach people you\u2019ve never connected with before?<\/p>\n<p>In these cases, word-of-mouth marketing doesn\u2019t hold much value anymore.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3>Expanding Beyond Word-of-Mouth: Reaching New Customers<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to grow, evolve, and succeed in all aspects, you need to plan for it!
