It reminded me of a lesson I always share with clients: you must <strong data-start=\"470\" data-end=\"494\">sell your free offer<\/strong> if you want people to take it seriously.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me set the scene:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Frankfurt Book Fair:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where publishers, authors, and agents showcase their best titles, make deals, and sign agreements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first three days are strictly for business professionals.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, on the final two days, the fair opens to the public. Hundreds of thousands of visitors pour in over one weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Surprising Part:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the last day, most publishers and agents pack up and leave. To avoid the hassle of transporting leftover books back home, they leave them behind &#8211; on full display &#8211; with a note: \u201cTake any book you like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free, bestselling books.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just there for the taking.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet &#8211; almost <\/span><b>no one takes them.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pavilions full of high-quality books remain untouched.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Because even <\/b><b><i>freebies must be sold.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Marketing Lesson<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say I invite a friend to my lecture and say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will give a really cool lecture; you should come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two things can happen:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The friend likely won\u2019t come, because I didn\u2019t explain why it\u2019s valuable to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse, they\u2019ll come just to \u201cdo me a favor\u201d &#8211; arriving late, leaving early, disengaged, and possibly even disrupting others. In their mind, they\u2019ve done something <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not the outcome I want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want attendees who are genuinely interested and who understand the value they\u2019ll receive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Solution<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when offering something for free, you need to show people <\/span><b><i>what&#8217;s in it for them<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re inviting someone to an event, explain how it benefits them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help them see <\/span><b>why<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s worth their time and attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like those free books at the fair &#8211; people won\u2019t pick them up unless someone explains what they can gain by doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Bottom Line<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b>If it matters that someone shows up, it\u2019s your responsibility to make them want to.
