Summary
Getting people to act isn’t about control; it’s about clear, empathetic communication. By respecting others and understanding their needs, you can inspire cooperation without force.
Effective communication for motivation is a skill that relies on empathy and clarity.
By understanding and addressing others’ needs, you can inspire action without resorting to control or pressure.
Mastering effective communication for motivation helps build trust, foster collaboration, and achieve better outcomes. Whether in personal or professional settings, effective communication for motivation makes all the difference.
I’ve always believed that good educators in Israel are the best persuaders.
30-40 children in a classroom, double that number of parents, countless educational challenges, and a culture of parental involvement (if not intervention) on a daily basis.
Add to that the Israeli mentality – not always considerate of others and loving instant gratification – and other objective factors, and you have nearly impossible conditions for educators in Israel, forcing them to find creative ways to persuade, convey messages, and motivate both parents and children.
A great example I experienced was six years ago when my youngest son, Yoavi (now entering 7th grade), finished his final year of kindergarten.
At the end of each year, during the graduation ceremony, the parents sit in a circle on the children’s small chairs, and the children join them and perform.
After the event, during the distribution of certificates and gifts, the typical process is to hand out certificates according to seating order or alphabetically (leaving kids whose names start with late letters always last).
The previous year at the pre-kindergarten graduation, the teacher Anat called the names in seating order.
Each child would enthusiastically show their certificate to their parents, who would start talking and making noise.
Some parents even got up to organize and gather their child’s things during the ceremony, resulting in a situation where, by the time they reached the last kids, there was a lot of noise, and many parents and children were already up and moving around.
The last children received their certificates quickly, with hardly any acknowledgment.
This left a bad impression, especially on teacher Anat.
Fast forward to the following year at the kindergarten graduation.
Same place, same small chairs, same circle arrangement, and (almost) the same parents and children. Before starting the ceremony, the teacher briefly reminded everyone of what had happened the previous year and then said to the parents:
“I don’t want to impose on you or try to teach you how to behave.
I just have two requests for this ceremony –
that every parent behaves as if their child is the last to receive a certificate,
and that every parent claps for each child as if they were their own.”
That’s it.
The ceremony began.
Thanks to those two very precise sentences, the parents followed the teacher’s guidance exactly, and the result was that all parents stayed engaged throughout the ceremony.
Every child, even those at the end, received full respect, attention, and applause, making them feel truly special. The teacher achieved exactly what she wanted without coercion, stress, remarks, shouting, or discomfort.
The key to success in life, career, and business is knowing how to motivate people, persuade them, and build long-term relationships and collaborations – but not through manipulation, coercion, control, authority, or deceit.
Instead, it’s through empathetic communication, based on the values of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” a win-win approach, genuine listening, understanding others’ needs, and conveying messages tailored to the other person’s perspective. These are universal values that apply to everyone in every situation, especially in the current world of 2023-2024.
How can you apply this in practice?
How can you act transparently, truthfully, and “cleanly” and still (with a high likelihood) get what you want?
How can you pursue your interests while respecting the desires and interests of others?
I will talk about all this and more in our special “Business Acceleration 2023” event, which Amir Harduf and I will host on Zoom very soon.
