Why a Personal Marketing Strategy Matters
A strong personal marketing strategy doesn’t require expensive ads or social media mastery. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as taking a walk.
In early 2015, I gave a lecture at a bank I consult for. The audience? All the bank’s branch managers.
Before I spoke, the bank’s Vice President of Marketing, who had once been a branch manager himself, gave a talk about increasing the number of business accounts in each branch.
He posed a few simple questions:
“How many of you are located inside a commercial center?”
About half raised their hands.
“How many of you are situated in an office building?”
About a third responded.
“Which of you manage a branch in a shopping mall?”
The rest raised their hands.
Then came the real question:
“Which of you, during the past year, left the branch and walked around to see the other businesses in the mall, the commercial center, or your office building to get to know the business owners and tell them about your branch?”
Not a single hand went up!
Personal Marketing Strategy Is Simpler Than You Think
There’s a common belief that marketing and sales require complex strategies or natural talent. Many think there’s some mysterious formula at play – that unless you have “the gift,” success is out of reach.
But the truth?
In most cases, success stems from:
-
Initiative
-
Diligence
-
A personal relationship
This is the heart of a personal marketing strategy.
How to Apply a Personal Marketing Strategy Today
What if a branch manager stepped out of the office one afternoon and visited nearby businesses? Just dropped in to introduce themselves, with a few brochures in hand?
It wouldn’t cost anything.
No travel expenses.
The promotional materials already exist.
And the time investment would be minimal.
But the outcome?
Suddenly, the bank becomes human.
It’s not just another faceless institution.
Now there’s someone real behind the name.
Someone who cares.
Someone just around the corner.
Even if most business owners don’t switch banks, some will. And you only need a few to create a big difference.
Confidence Is a Non-Negotiable
Let me be blunt: if you don’t believe in your value, no one else will.
That’s why your personal marketing strategy must be backed by real confidence. And confidence is something you practice – not something you’re born with.
I wrote about this in my article, Price With Confidence – Don’t Negotiate With Yourself.
Too many people sabotage themselves before they even open their mouths. They lower their prices. Apologize for their offers. Make excuses.
Stop it.
You’re a professional. Own your price. Own your presence. Walk into the room like you deserve to be there – because you do.
A Personal Marketing Strategy Worked Before – and It Still Works
The Marketing VP backed me up. When he was managing a branch, there were no social networks, no online lead generation.
They had to “wear out their shoes” – go door to door, meet people face-to-face, learn their needs, and earn their trust.
Today, it’s easy to sit behind a screen and wait for leads. But even in a digital age, people value initiative and personal attention more than ever.
Case Study: A Missed Opportunity Without a Personal Touch
One of my clients, an interior designer who specializes in office branding, once had a meeting with a large potential customer – a chain with lots of office space.
When she arrived, she noticed a competitor’s office directly across the street with a big sign.
She assumed the meeting was pointless. Surely the customer was already working with the designer across the street.
But to her surprise, during the meeting she found out the customer had no idea the other designer even existed.
That competitor probably spent big on ads and branding – but missed one thing: a personal marketing strategy. They never knocked on the door.
Conclusion: Start Your Personal Marketing Strategy with a Walk
Some of the work you want is right under your nose.
You just need to:
-
Know where to look
-
Take the initiative
-
Say the right things at the right time
-
And be willing to wear out a few pairs of shoes along the way
