Many businesses face word-of-mouth marketing challenges, as this method, while effective, has significant limitations.
As I reflect on 2024, professionally, personally, and in business, I’m also planning for 2025—setting sales goals, financial targets, objectives, and most importantly, determining the path to achieve them: my marketing strategy.
Yes, to reach my desired goals and increase my revenue, I need to carefully plan my marketing moves. It sounds obvious, doesn’t it?
Yet it’s amazing how few people actually do this.
How do I know?
Because when I ask the businesses and companies I work with, as well as the private individuals and managers I advise, the following question:
“How do you market your business or yourself?”
The most common response is: “Word-of-mouth.”
In other words, people often don’t invest in or plan their marketing efforts. Instead, they rely on their existing customers to spread the word about them.
Word-of-mouth marketing is indeed effective (with high conversion rates), but it has two significant drawbacks:
1. Why Word-of-Mouth Marketing Isn’t Enough to Grow Your Business
If I wait for one satisfied customer, let’s call them X, to talk about me, months (or even years) could pass before someone else contacts me and says, “I heard about you through X.”
Meanwhile, during that gap, there are bills to pay—rent, employee salaries, and other expenses, right?
That’s a problem.
One of the biggest word-of-mouth marketing challenges is the long time it takes to generate referrals between customers.
2. The Fundamental Assumption is Flawed
The second, more critical issue lies in the assumption that people must first use your product or service before recommending it.
Now let me ask you this:
What happens if you’re just starting a new business? Or launching a new campaign, department, or product?
And what if you want to expand your customer base and reach people you’ve never connected with before?
In these cases, word-of-mouth marketing doesn’t hold much value anymore.
Expanding Beyond Word-of-Mouth: Reaching New Customers
If you want to grow, evolve, and succeed in all aspects, you need to plan for it! It won’t just happen on its own.
Let’s get back to planning for 2025 (yours and mine).
If, like me, you work methodically and know roughly what your next business and professional year will look like (and even your personal year—you can plan vacations, family events, etc.), then you’re in a good place.
But if you’ve read this email and have no idea how to plan effectively (or if you lack the time or motivation), I have a practical, free solution for you:
My good friend and long-time colleague, Eran Stern, one of Israel’s leading and most successful business mentors, and author of the bestseller “Fulfill”, has released a series of free videos.
